Answers

  1. What is Georeader?

The Georeader App allows you to place messages anywhere in the world that your smartphone will say aloud when you enter the area where the message was located. It is for Android and IOS.

  2. What do I need to get started?

You will need, 4 things. 1) A smartphone running Android Operating system 1.6 or higher 2)Google Maps installed on your phone* 3)Google Voice installed on your phone* 4) The Georeader app downloaded from the App market *note: Google Maps and Voice are commonly pre-installed on many phones already such as the Motorala Droid

  3. Sometimes my phone has trouble finding a GPS signal.

This is more a function of the phone, not the App. I have seen it take a few minutes to find and lock in the GPS signal. Make sure you are not indoors, Consult your phones users groups for advice.

  4. What accessories do you recommend? A Car Charger?

We highly recommend a good car charger and a way to connect your phone to your car's stereo. It sounds better. Any app that uses the GPS like this one consumes more power. ( A good car charger has an output of close to 1000ma output. This means it can meet or surpass the phone's demands) The Motorola Vehicle Power Adapter MicroUSB Rapid Rate Charger is a very good one and the price is under $7.00 on Amazon.com. We have used a cassette tape adapter, the "Jupiter Jack" as seen on TV , and the car's stereo auxiliary input port with good success as means to get sound into the car speaker system. Bluetooth is the best way if you have a newer vehicle.

  5. On the Android version, how do I set or change the range at which GeoReader searches for talking points?

If you are receiving too many or too few talking points on your trip, you may want to decrease or increase your range. To do so, login, go to my profile, then settings, then set the radius to 1 through 20 miles, walk mode or bike mode. The farther the radius, the more talking points you will receive.

  6. How should I set up GeoReader when I am walking or biking as compared to driving?

If you are walking or biking, you want to set your profile to a shorter radius so you can hear the talking point as you get very close to the location. To change the search radius for walk or bike mode, login, go to my profile, settings and then search for these settings. They will automatically shorten the search radius for you. Remember to change it back when driving else the app may not have enough time to react.

  7. How do I reset my talking point history? What does it mean?

Once you are read a particular talking point, GeoReader will not repeat the talking point when you pass by the location a second time. This is so you will always hear new information, even if you travel on the same route. However, if you want to replay a talking point, you must reset your talking point history. To do so, login, go to my profile, settings, and then reset talking point history.

  8. How long does a talking point last?

We haven't exactly decided yet but if its a historical fact of significance then it will probably stay indefinitely, if it is very individualize then we will eventually( let's say 6 months) clean up the data base and delete the point. We, many in the interim period reclassify it to friends or private status. As this app is very new, we are pretty laid back and will keep points around as people explore how to use the app. We still would like folks to use the process for creating points that are specific to advertising and these durations can be selected If there are durations that are not specified in the menus, please email sales@mygeoreader.com and we will work it out.

  9. Is Georeader available on the iphone and ipad?

FINALLY YES! It was just released on itunes. Search under Georeader. There are some differences between the platforms. See further down the FAQs for more description of the changes occurred. Make sure your iphone and ipad have the features that are required to support the app such as network connect, not just wifi. As you can see, the website needs some updating to reflect the newest member of the Georeader family so this is being pursed.

  10. What can Talking Points be about?

You can make a message about anything that you think others may find of interest. Roadside Historical Markers are a common topic but it certainly is not limited to these items. Famous Residents from your town, mysterious places, movie trivia or how your town got its name are some examples. Good fishing spots, speed traps, even poetry can all be written about. Just tag them appropriately and keep it clean. If you want to write about an active commercial enterprise or event, we just ask that you use the Advertise button on the website to create points for others to hear.

  11. I wish to expand some of the spoken text for a Talking Point. Let's say I want to add some information to a talking point about National Register Of Historic Place Site, what do I do?

Send an Email to Talkingpointchange@mygeoreader.com. In the subject heading of the email put the title of the Talking Point, In the Body of the email put the text you would like spoken, (300 Character Count Limit ). We try to add it as soon as we can.

  12. I found a typo in a talking point. Can I let you know?

Sure! We appreciate the help. While we tried our best to catch them we are certain we missed some. Send us an Email to TalkingPointChange@mygeoreader.com, include the title of the talking point in the subject heading, write Typo in the body and we will try to fix it as soon as we can.

  13. Why on some talking points does it say "See Details for more information" after talking a bit?

The talking points had more information but had reached a point where it was felt that it was getting a little excessive in length. We still wanted to include the remaining information in the Details of the point if you were still curious and wanted to know more. We tried to cut off the speech at a natural point in the sentence but there is room for improvement. In order to access this information during a trip, you must hit the detail button as the talking point is being read.

  14. Is the Georeader app designed to be hands free?

Yes, just hit "Start Trip" , take off, and Georeader will do the rest. There is no requirement to touch or even look at your phone's screen once you start. Just "Activate and Navigate".

  15. What if I want to edit a talking point I created?

No problem. Just send an Email to Talkingpointchange@mygeoreader.com. In the subject heading of the email put the title of the Talking Point, In the Body of the email put the corrected text you would like spoken, (300 Character Count Limit). If you want us to change access of who can hear the talking point, then please let us know what access you would like (only you, friends or public). We try to make the changes as soon as we can. This includes deleting it if you want. Eventually we will make this better but for now this is how its done.

  16. My Android, and Google Voice, comes standard with PICO text to speech. Do other text to speech programs work with Georeader so I can change the Voice?

Yes, I have used SVOX and the "Grace" Voice successfully. I found it on the android market. It does cost $2.99 but the difference could be heard.

  17. Can I use Google Translate to translate my speech into text, then paste it into a Talking Point? I hate typing.

Amazingly Yes!! In Android you hold the text screen down after making sure Google Translate correctly captures what you are trying to say, and a copy option appears. Copy it. When running Georeader and making a Talking Point Message, touch the screen, and paste will appear. You can still edit the message before saving if necessary.

  18. What happens if I get a phone call while the GeoReader App is speaking?

The GeoReader app will stop speaking to allow you to take the call.

  19. What are some tips to create talking points that are read correctly?

The text-to-speech function does not always pronounce words correctly. Try not to use abbreviations or dashes, parenthesis or other characters like * , % or $ etc. If you are using an acronym, then be sure to put a period after each letter (U.F.O. instead of UFO). You can outsmart the text to speech function by phonetically spelling mispronounced words (Oh hi Oh, instead of Ohio).

  20. Can I make an Advertising Talking Point for my business or event?

Absolutely, just click on the Advertise button and follow the steps. You can place it anywhere in the world. Please use this approach as regular talking points are reserved for non commercial topics.

  21. What are the advantages of Talking Points over other forms of Media?

Talking Points Advertising combines the best features of Radio and Bill Board Signs. Like Radio, there is a captive audience to hear the message. Like Signs, they work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Unlike radio, the message can be tailored to a specif area or group, and unlike Billboards, they do not create an eyesore and block views. You control the message, its duration and its location. It's very easy to do.

  22. How do I let customer know that my business is using Advertising Talking Points?

Feel free to encourage them to download the free app. They will like it and appreciate that you directed them to something they can use and find interesting. Posting a sign to "Hear us on Georeader" is encouraged and providing the Website address , www.mygeoreader.com can help them learn more.

  23. How can I find out the number of times my talking point has been listened to?

All talking points you create come with a report showing the number of times the point has been accessed per day. Once you are signed in, go to my talking points and click on the points to access their graph.

  24. How can I report a talking point with offensive content?

If you hear a talking point that is inappropriate, you may immediately flag it. Hit the details button while the talking point is being read, then hit the flag as inappropriate button. Or, hit finish your trip and click on the talking point from the map, then hit the flag as inappropriate button. The point will be removed from public access immediately. Alternatively, you can email us at Talkingpointchange@mygeoreader.com. We are counting on our users to report inappropriate content immediately so we can all help to keep GeoReader a positive experience for all users. If the talking point is deemed inappropriate, the user who created the talking point will be reprimanded up to and including cancellation of their account.

  25. Can I have an advertising talking point active for a longer time, say a year?

Yes, please email us Sales@mygeoreader.com to notify us and we can arrange this, There will be a discount.

  26. Do you have any tips for using the app for walking tours on the Android version?

One trick I have found is to simply not hit "start trip" but surf on the app in the area you are in. You can see your location and get the details of the points around you. This works good if its a noisy downtown. Remember, you need to make an account (free) to access the walking mode range setting

  27. What else is going on with the Georeader App? Is in the news?

The app has been having a lot of interest! It was/is a Finalist 2010 and 2011 European Satellite Navigation contest. Been positively reviewed in GNSS magazine GoogleMapsMania Makeusof.com Killerstartups.com. Described as a "Brilliant Idea" by the creator of Android Police website Praised by the Google maps Design Group Leader and forwarded to his Design team. It is a candidate for ABC's TV Show" Shark Tank".

  28. After I log in on the website, On my profile page, if I want to change things such as my name, I get a" please match the required format" message. I can't seem to make it go away no matter what I enter unless I make it blank. What can I do?

This a a bug that is being worked on. You can make changes to your profile but for now, do them through the app itself, not the website. Sorry about this and we hope to fix it soon.

  29. What are some differences/ similarities between the iphone and droid version?

First both are great and give a very similar experience to the user . But we have made some changes. This is the first version of the iphone. (1) On the iphone version, the range is scaled automatically based on your speed. The range shrinks when you are walking and scales up when you are driving. (2) Presently, for the iphone version, you can't add a Talking Point on location like on the Android version. You can still though add them through the Web Site interface like the Android. (3) There are less layers on the iphone interface to navigate around. (4) They both can run in the background. (5) They both have access to the same database. (6) They both are hands free in operation. Over time we will bring the platforms closer together in look and use.

  30. If I make a Talking Point through the web interface and I want to hear it on my Iphone, what should it be classified as "Private", "Friends only", or "Public"?

Please classify it as "Public" for now. iphone version 1.0 currently only reads "public" points

  31. Should I turn on my location services ON for the iPhone in order for the app to find me and points?

Yes. It is under Privacy settings, slide Georeader's to "on" after install to use.

  32. Can the Georeader platform be customized to for specific Customers? What else can be done?

The Georeader Engine is available for custom applications. Here are a few of the following options that are possible with additional programming. 1) AppDaptible(TM) option: The Georeader app can add or delete certain features based on geological locations.
